The Magic Behind The User Interface

Google Trends tracks and reports search queries, the information being grouped by geographical location and timeline.

For movies, the number of search queries on Google has a significant increase around the date of release. To forecast a life path for a coming soon movie, we should compare its queries with the queries from the same time before the release date of a similar older movie. For Example, if you want to forecast a movie two weeks before the release date, you should compare it with a similar movie two weeks before its release date. The Scale Factor's accuracy is more reliable as you get closer to the release date.

The scale factor represents the level of similarity between the movies and it's a ratio between the search queries. Consider the scale factor as a suggestion, in the end the system uses the value set by you manually. As default, the scale factor is 1 which means the movies have a similarity factor of 100%.
